Decision Assurance

Category distinction

Decision assurance vs model risk management

Model risk management governs models across their lifecycle. Decision assurance preserves the role a model actually played in a specific consequential decision.

Definition

The precise question

Model risk management is model-centred; decision assurance is decision-centred and includes model contribution alongside evidence, authority, judgement and commitment.

Independent review

The envelope can link model output, runtime records, policy versions, authority records, claims documents, human rationale, external data and approvals while preserving each source's declared limits.

Insurance example

What this looks like in practice

A model validation report may establish that a model was approved for use. A decision package records the version, output, input context, human review and commitment for a particular underwriting act.

Evidence map

What a reviewer needs to see

  • Model identity, version and approval context
  • Input and output relationship to the decision
  • Human judgement, authority, commitment and limitations

Different levels of abstraction

A model can be acceptable in general and still be poorly evidenced in one decision. Conversely, a well-preserved decision package does not make a model well governed. The disciplines are complementary.

What a reviewer needs

  • Which model and configuration contributed
  • What inputs and outputs were available at execution
  • How a person interpreted, accepted or overrode the result
  • Which authority and governing conditions applied
  • What commitment followed

A practical handoff

Link the relevant model governance record to the decision envelope and retain the native record. Do not collapse lifecycle governance and decision evidence into one claim.

The VES connection

A published evidence structure

VES 1.2 lets model records enter as Evidence Objects without treating them as proof of the whole decision-state.

Read VES 1.2 for the published Decision Envelope, Evidence Object and verification model.

Boundary

Decision assurance does not validate a model, set model policy or guarantee a model-assisted outcome. It preserves the declared system contribution in context.
